Our Story

Before digital photo booths, before instant prints, before any of it, there were the old enclosed booths that still used film and chemicals. You'd cram in with a bunch of high school friends, take the most ridiculous photos you could think of, and then wait. The strip would eventually come out and you'd have to fan it dry before you could even see what you'd got. It was chaotic and cramped and absolutely brilliant. I still have photos from those days and looking back at them takes me straight back to being a teenager.

That love for photo booths never really went away.

The moment everything changed was the 17th of September 2010, at Jerryl and Jean's wedding. It was the first wedding I'd ever been to with a photo booth and I remember walking back to the car that night, looking at my partner Sonny, and saying out loud that was a brilliant business idea. Something about watching everyone light up around that booth, strangers becoming friends, families squeezing in together, people laughing harder than they had all night. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

A few years later, on maternity leave with my first child and very motivated not to go back to full time work, I decided to do something about it.

The Booth Box was where it all began, launching in 2012. A year later we made the decision to split things in two. Shutter Booth became our dedicated event hire company, and The Booth Box evolved into something more specialised, designing and selling photo booths to others wanting to start their own businesses in the industry. We guide them from the very beginning, helping them understand the business, supplying them with the right equipment, and supporting them through their photo booth journey. In 2016 we launched Photobooth Design Co, an online store supplying props, backdrops and downloadable templates to booth operators around the country.

Over the years the business has also grown me as a creative. I've loved developing my skills in photography, design and videography, and that creative side now runs through everything we produce, from the print layouts and backdrops to the way we think about lighting on the night.

Our involvement in the industry has gone beyond just running events. Through The Booth Box and Photobooth Design Co we exhibited at BoothCon, Australia's first ever photo booth expo, for three consecutive years, showcasing our booths, backdrops and props to others in the industry. I also ran a MasterClass teaching photo booth operators how to design and create their own templates using Adobe Photoshop. But what I'm most proud of is seeing the businesses we helped get started go on to succeed in their own right. This business changed my life. The flexibility, the creativity, the lifestyle it gave me and my family. Knowing that we played a small part in giving others that same experience, that sits with me in the best possible way.

Since we started we've completed just over 3,000 events across Melbourne. We've also lived through something we never could have planned for. Melbourne's Covid lockdowns hit the events industry harder than most, and there were moments where the future felt genuinely uncertain. But we came out the other side, and if anything it made us appreciate what we do even more.

We've been doing this for over a decade and the thing that keeps us going is still the same thing that started it all. We capture moments people want to remember. The big ones, weddings, milestone birthdays, the nights everyone talks about for years afterwards.

Over the years, we've been fortunate to provide photo booth experiences at weddings, school formals, brand activations and corporate events held at some of Melbourne's most iconic venues.

Life has changed a lot since those early days. I lost my soulmate and life partner, someone I'd known since I was two years old, and the father of my kids. But I still have every photo from the test shoots before events, the kids tiny in the booth, and then a little bigger, and then bigger again. Those photos mean everything to me. They're exactly why I believe so deeply in what we do.

The team around me shares that same belief. We have attendants who have been with us for years because they genuinely love the job. We obsess over lighting, over print quality, over making sure every single person walks away with a photo they're happy with. We know that weddings and big events don't get a second chance. You can't go back and reshoot the night. That responsibility isn't lost on us and we take it seriously every single time.

That's who we are. That's why we do it.

The people who make it happen

Behind every glowing Google review is one of these faces.

We're genuinely lucky to have the team we have. These aren't just people who show up and do a job. They're consistent, dedicated and deeply committed to getting it right every single time. Over the years they've become more than colleagues, they're family. My photo booth family. And honestly, the fact that many of them have been with us for years says everything about who they are.

Shutter Booth Owner & Director - Maria

Maria, Founder & The Person Behind The Scenes

Founder & Director I'm the one you'll rarely see on the night but I'm behind just about everything that makes it work. The website, the print layouts, the booth designs, the props, and the workflows the team follow so every event runs efficiently and nothing gets left to chance. I look after brand activations and multi-day hire enquiries, and I'm the one troubleshooting behind the scenes to make sure the technology and experience is seamless from start to finish. Building things, designing things, solving things. That's my corner of Shutter Booth.

But Shutter Booth is nothing without the people around me. Christine is the warm voice behind every booking, the one making sure every client feels looked after long before the night arrives. And then there's the team who show up on the night, the faces, the energy, the reason guests walk away smiling. We each play our part, but together we make it work. And honestly, Shutter Booth would not be here without every single one of them.

Christine, The voice behind every booking

Shutter Booth Team:  Joined our team in 2024

Christine is the engine room. She handles every enquiry and booking and her precise attention to detail is the reason everything runs as smoothly as it does. If you've been in touch with us, you've probably already spoken to her. What makes it even more special is that Christine is one of my closest friends from uni. The stars aligned and I feel incredibly lucky to have her on board.

Meet the team - Bernadette Booth Attendant

Bernadette, Booth Attendant

Shutter Booth Team:  Joined our team in 2018

Bernadette has been with us longer than anyone, but her photo booth story goes back even further than that. Before the digital age she worked transporting the big old chemical booths to events, so you could say this has always been her world. She brings an energy to every event that guests feel from the moment they walk up to the booth.

Be prepared if you're having a themed party too, this one has been known to dress the part. She once showed up as a sailor at a Nautical Party and nobody was surprised in the slightest.

She recently showed me one of her photo booth albums. Bernadette keeps every photo she has ever taken with a guest and puts them into a scrapbook. Every single one. If you ever needed proof of how much someone truly loves what they do, there it is. She is one of a kind and an absolute blessing to this team.

Meet the team - Michelle, Photobooth Attendant

Michelle, Booth Attendant & Roaming Photographer

Shutter Booth Team:  Joined our team in 2021

Michelle is a mum of five and somehow still the most energetic person in the room. She brings a warmth that wins over absolutely everyone, and with a background in kinder photography she has a natural eye for capturing genuine moments that makes her an incredible roaming photographer at events.

But what really sets Michelle apart is the effort she puts in when nobody's watching. She's the one who will hunt down the bride and groom if she's noticed they haven't had a photo together yet. She's the one who will bring a guest back for a retake even when the guest was perfectly happy with the shot, because Michelle wasn't. Even on the days when life has taken everything out of her, she shows up and gives every single guest everything she has.

That's not something you can train. That's just who she is.

Meet the team - Kim our Booth Attendant

Kim. Booth Attendant

Kim is a graphic designer running her own creative business on the side, so she has a great eye for detail and understands the visual side of what we do better than most. When she's not designing or working events she's outdoors and active. She fits right in here.

Meet the team - Our booth attendant, Mira

The kindest and warmest soul you'll ever meet, and we mean that genuinely. Mira has a natural love for photography and brings a quiet thoughtfulness to everything she does at events. She also happens to be the biggest Elvis Presley fan you'll ever come across, which tells you something about the kind of person she is. One of a kind.

New to the team Bernadette's daughter, which tells you everything you need to know. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree and we're thrilled to have her on board.  Technically, Maddie has actually been helping out with a few events over the years.  Especially school events and formals, all the kids and teens love her!
